NIELS’ MORNING GREETINGS

ON: FEBRUARY 15

New 2021 edition

TODAY’s LENGTH:

This day is here in Belgium 2 hours and 6 minutes longer than December 21. Its length is 10 hours and 4 minute – from 07.55 to 17.59.

See more – also in English – about where you are on www.dagenslaengde.dk

TODAY’s NAME:

This day is called FAUSTINUS’ DAY.  Faustinus and his brother Jovita were Christians, who had a terrible death in Rome in 120 AC.  First they were thrown in front of the wild animals. But they refused to eat them and attacked and killed the Roman soldiers instead. After that the two brothers were tortured with red-hot iron and had fluid lead put into their throats. At the end they were beheaded.

The brothers are today the patrons of the area Brescia in the north of Italy.

The name of this day in Belgium is SAINT CLAUDE. He was a French saint from Besancon, and he lived from 607-99. He was a monk, priest, abbot and bishop.

TODAY’s EVENT:

2005:  The video-sharing service YouTube starts on the Internet. From 2006 Google has been the owner, and today it contains millions of small (and less small) free videos uploaded by people all over the world. I have also made my own YouTube channel. I call it NJTube J  I will very soon add more videos. You can see, what it offers right now here:

TODAY’s QUESTION:

The vessel of the Danaids – what’s the origin of that? And what does it mean today?

Danaos or Danaus was in Greek mythology the son of a king in Egypt. He had 50 daughters – called the Danaids. They were forced to marry 50 men. But when 49 of then during the wedding night killed their husbands they were afterwards condemned to pour water into a vessel, which had no bottom. And according to the legend they continue to do that all the time until this very day.   In other words:  this is a work which never ends.

So the expression the vessel of the Danaids refers to a task, which is futile and useless, and which never ends.

QUESTION FOR TOMORROW:

Money doesn’t smell  - what’s the origin of that expression? And what does it mean?
