TODAY - January 20
NIELS’ MORNING GREETINGS
ON: JANUARY 20
New 2021 edition
TODAY’s PERSON:
I have today
chosen the British actor AUDREY HEPBURN. She was born in Brussels in 1929 and died on
this day in 1993 in her home in Switzerland.
Why was she born in Brussels ? Because her British husband was a
businessman and moved to Brussels in the 1920ies to run a branch of his Loaning
company here. Her mother was Dutch –
member of a noble family in Arnhem. After
her parents got divorced she lived with her mother in Arnhem during the German
occupation 1940-45. She and her family helped the Dutch resistance in different
ways. After the war she went to school
in Kent in England, started ballet and soon also acting. Her real career as actor started with Gigi on
Broadway in New York in 1951 – followed by one of her most famous films, Roman
Holiday, with Gregory Peck. Later followed
many other famous films like Breatfast at Tiffany’s. She was also in 1964 one of the main start in
My Fair Lady.
In addition to
her work as a famous actor she was also from 1954 Goodwill Ambassador for
UNICEF, the UN agency working for protection of children all over the world.
One of her most
famous quotes was: The most important
thing is to enjoy your life – to be happy – it’s all that matters!

TODAY’s NAME:
This day is called FABIAN’s
and SEBASTIAN’s DAY.
The pious Fabian was
appointed as pope in 236 AC following a “sign from heaven”. During the election
a pigeon suddenly came and “parked” on his head. Then he was elected. And later
he has often been portrayed with a pigeon. After a peaceful and constructive
period he was at the end beheaded by the Roman emperor on January 20, 250 AC.
Sebastian was a Christian officer in emperor Diocletian’s army. His own
soldiers killed him with arrows. But he only died when he was beheaded.
The day’s name in Belgium is the same:
SAINT SEBASTIÉN.
TODAY’s EVENT:
1961: John F. Kennedy becomes
the so far youngest and the first catholic president of the United States.
TODAY’s QUESTION:
Sisyphonean Labour – what’s
the origin of this expression? And it means what?
The Greek poet Homer (about 8 centuries BC) tells in the Odyssee about the Greek king
Sisyphos. At a certain moment he has to suffer for his many sins, including his
frequent excitements. He is, therefore, asked to roll a big stone to the top of
a big mountain. Just before the top the stone rolls back each time. So he has
to start all over again.
That is why the expression Sisyphonean Labour today means very hard and
very useless work, which does not give any results.
QUESTION FOR TOMORROW:
Platonic love – where does that come from? And means what?
