TODAY’s NAME:

Today’s name is ABEL’s DAY.  He was according to the Old Testament the son of Adam and Eve. And the legend tells that he was killed by his brother Kain.

This day is also one of the 32 so-called Tycho Brahe Days. They are days, which the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe in the 17th century based on his calculations appointed as particular unfortunate.  What old nonsense L

The day’s name in Belgium is SAINTS BASILE ET GRÉGOIRE.  They were both important figures in the Christian church in the 4th century in Cappadonia in nowadays Turkey:  Basile (329-79) as bishop in Carserea and Grégoire (330-89) as patriarch in Constantinople.

TODAY’s EVENT:

1635:  Cardinal Richelieu is founding Academie Francaise. Its main purpose is to ensure the pureness of the French language.

TODAY’s QUESTION:

Estaminet  -  what is that? And where does it come from?

This is historically a small bar or restaurant in north-eastern France (Nord-Pas-de-Calais) and in Belgium. The local farmers, textile workers and miners met in the Estaminets. Here they could order simple regional food, play boules, or have meetings in their local clubs.

Those Estaminets have almost disappeared today, though there are still a number of them around. And often they are specifically promoted.

QUESTION FOR TOMORROW:

Flying Dutchman   -  what is that? And what is the history behind it?
