NIELS’ MORNING GREETINGS

ON: SEPTEMBER 10

New edition

TODAY’s LENGTH:

This day is here in Denmark 4 hours and 26 minutes shorter than June 21. Its length is 13 hours and 9 minutes – from 06.38 to 1946.

See more – also in English – about where you are on:  www.dagenslaengde.dk

TODAY’s NAME:

Today is called BURCHARDT’s DAY. It comes from the Christian man Burchhardt. He came originally from Wessex in England. But he went to Germany to help Bonifacius in his work to preach the gospel. At the end he became archbishop in Würzburg in Germany. He died in the year 754 AC.

Today is also one of the 32 so-called Tycho Brahe days. They are days, which the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe in the 17th century on the basis of his calculations considered to be specifically unfortunate.  ( What old nonsense ! )

In Belgium the day’s name is SAINT THÉODARD – after a bishop in Narbonne in the south of France. He lived in the years 840-93.

TODAY’s EVENT:

2002: Switzerland becomes member state no. 190 of the United Nations.

TODAY’s QUESTION:

Murphy's law - what is the history behind that expression? And what is it?

It comes from England. We don’t know exactly, who this Murphy was. But it is certain that it refers to an Irishman (Murphy is a typical Irish name). This Irishman was electrician. And the English had no confidence in his technical skills. Things always went wrong, when he tried to do something.

In this way the expression Murphy’s Law came to mean, that if anything can go wrong it will go wrong.

This is not nice or just to the Irish.  But history and traditions are not always nice and just L

QUESTION FOR TOMORROW:

Pour oil on stormy waters  -  what's the origin of that expression?

EUROPE - DO YOU KNOW ?

Yesterday's European question was:

What is FRONTEX?  And why is its work so important?

This is the EU agency, which together with the member states is responsible for safeguarding the external borders of the EU, esp. the Schengen countries. It was created in 2016 and has its headquarters in Warsaw in Poland. It has a total staff of about 1.500 specialists, who with very short notice are at disposal of member states with acute problems at their border to non-member countries. And it is coordinating cooperation between border authorities through joint data bases, exchange of experience, etc.   FRONTEX will be further strengthened in the coming years.

The European question for tomorrow:

How is the European Union important also for the use of credit cards?
