TODAY’s NAME:

This day is called AEGIDIUS’ DAY. He was born in Greece and settles later down as a hermit in Provence in Gallia ( France ). He lives from the milk of a hind, which comes to see him. He builds the monastery Saint-Gilles next to his hollow in the forest – with help from the local king Wamba, and he is its abbot until he dies on this day in the year 721 AC.

Aegidius is considered to be one of the Christians helping people in difficulties. And he is famous for helping persons who are paralysed or who suffer from cancer. He also gives special help to nursing mothers J

In Belgium the day’s name is the same:  SAINT GILLES.

TODAY’s EVENT:

1715:  King Louis XIV  ( The Sun King) dies after 72 years reign.  He is the longest serving monarch in European history.

QUESTION FOR TODAY:

Toucan - what is that?

THE KEEL-BUILT COLOURFUL BIRD

This beautiful tropical and sub-tropical bird lives in Southern Mexico, in Central America , in the north of South America and in the Caribbean. It is actually the national bird of the state of Belize in Central America.

The bird is 42-55 cm long. It has the size of a big crow. The bill is between 12 and 15 cm long.  It lives in trees and hops from one tree to another. It can fly, but it is a poor flyer.

It is a very social bird in the sense that 6-12 birds are normally together all the time.

The Toucans are mostly living from fruit. But now and then they also eat insects and lizards. They even take eggs from the nests of smaller birds.

Why do they have this huge bill? Many years ago people believed that they used it to find fish. But this is not true.  The bill is very light, but colourful. And it is used to find fruit and other stuff in holes in trees, where other birds cannot reach it.  And it is probably also keeping smaller birds at a distance, because they are a bit scared by such a big bill!

The name Toucan comes from a very old language in Brazil called Tupi.  It does not exist anymore.  The Portuguese – who conquered Brazil 500 years ago – called the bird a Tukana.   This is why its name today is Toucan.

And you know what?  We have a bar here in Brussels called BRASSERIE TOUCAN.
