TODAY’s NAME:
This day is
called JAKOBUS' DAY. The name goes back to the apostle Jakob the
Elder, of which the father was Zenedeus from Genezareth. He was the first
martyy apostle during the reign of king Herodes.
The day’s name
is the same in Belgium: SAINT
JACQUES. He died in Jerusalem in
year 44.
TODAY’s EVENT:
306: Constantine the Great is nominated as
Roman emperor.
TODAY’s
QUESTION:
Brexit - what is that ?
The word Brexit
has been made from the two English words Britain and Exit. It is the term
for the United Kingdom's decision to leave the European Union after 47 years'
membership. The decision was made by an advisory referendum on June 23, 2016.
Almost 52 % of the voters wanted to leave, which a bit more than 48 % wanted
the UK to stay. The turnout at the referendum was 72 %.
An interesting
aspect of the referendum was that a clear majority of voters in places like
London, Scotland and Northern Ireland wanted to stay. Another interesting
aspect was that the campaign before the referendum was dominated by lies and
false promises, which soon after the referendum became clear could not be
fulfilled. And a third interesting angle was that a clear majority of young
people wanted to stay in the EU. But only a small part of them actually voted.
The negotiations
between the EU and UK about a trade agreement seem to end without a result (
July 2020 ). My personal belief is that
the government under Boris Johnson has aimed at that result since the very
beginning.
If that happens
all trade between the UK and EU ( about
half of UK’s trade ) will after January 1, 2021 take place according to WTO
rules ( the World Trade Organisation ). This is much less advantageous than
being a member of EU or of having a trade agreement. Among other things it
means that each time the UK agrees lower tariffs or other decisions to promote
trade they automatically have to give the same advantages to all
member countries of WTO – which are 164 countries around the world.
QUESTION FOR
TOMORROW:
