TODAY’s NAME:

Today’s name is JEREMIAS’ DAY. He was one of the four great profets in the Old Testament. We know a lot about his activities from the Book of Jeremias in this Testament. Among many other things he predicted the destruction of Jerusalem.

Jeremias lived and worked for 40 years from the year 626 BC.

In Belgium the day is called BIENHEUREUSE ANNE DE BARTHOLÉMY,  a nun living from 1549 to 1626. She was born in Spain and died in Antwerp.

TODAY’s EVENT:

1979:  The first direct elections to the European Parliament take place.

TODAY’s QUESTION:

Where does the name SPAIN come from?

The ancient Phoenicians ( from nowadays Lebanon ) who arrived to trade with the peoples of the peninsula called it: SPHANIAM (land of rabbits), the Greeks that arrived to trade with our city states called it IBERIA from the river Iber ( today_ Ebro ) who is a plentiful large river with a large delta at the end. The Greeks eventually adopted SPANIA for the place and IBERIANS for the people. Later the Romans took the name into Latin HISPANIA. Hispania became España in Spanish and Espagne in French, Espagne became Spain imported to English.

This is often how history of names for places and populations develop over time.
